Being a survivor of 43 year of abuse, regular therapy was not working for me. Although I was functional, I was full of rage and sadness. I couldn’t take it any more and started searching for an answer. I found that answer when I came across a wonderful Therapist; Joan E. Childs. She was highly trained in many things in her field, one of which was “Inner child work”. That was what I was searching for. I wanted someone with John Bradshaw’s approach. She was the one. I saw that she offered 1-5 day intensive sessions. I was ready to dive in and asked her for the 5 day. I had to travel a long distance to see her, but it was life changing. I did the 5 day intensive and believe me, it was intense.
We did Inner Child Work, NLP, EMDR, Parts Work, Meditation, etc. From the minute I met Joan, I felt safe and for someone from an abusive background, that is huge. She surpassed my expectations. Her energy is amazing and she has the art of “really listening” down perfectly. Not only did she spend 8-9 hours per day with me, she has so graciously let me know she is available to me any time. She does not just work with you for 5 days and you go on your merry way.
Joan was caring, patient and is simply an amazing Therapist and person. The 5 day intensive is not a fix all, but it was such a huge beginning for me. I came home with different eyes and a heart that was beating again. I would highly recommend Joan and the 5 day intensive for anyone who is willing to work, to trust, to cry and to speak their truth. She was definitely my angel.
After the loss of our young daughter, I was desperately seeking a seasoned therapist that could provide the intense treatment I needed for this catastrophic event. When I found Joan’s website online, I knew immediately I had to see her. She had everything I was looking for; many, many years of helping mothers like me, a personal first-hand experience of what I was going through, and a prolific well-established presence in the mental health community. I was also drawn to her because she is an inspiration to those of us who are struggling.
I made the trip from Ohio to her office in Florida for a two-day intensive treatment session. She was everything I hoped she would be and I wish I lived in Florida so that I could see her on a weekly basis.
Joan is a ‘veteran’ when it comes to therapy, and it shows. She listens, processes, and then offers personal meaningful advice based on her vast knowledge of psychology, and nearly forty years of practice. What she does best is really lean-in and listen. I came to trust her expertise as a trained clinician, and her understanding and compassion on a personal level. She also makes herself available after you return home, and is committed to long-term follow up care. I would highly recommend Joan, as you can tell I have gained an invaluable resource.
After reading your book “Complex PTSD”, I followed through with an Intensive 2-Day treatment with Joan Childs. I found out about her from your website as a Therapist who worked with a lot of the therapy modalities you mentioned in your book. I finally started the kind of treatment from Joan that I have needed most of my life. I am 65 years old and now have a path to wellness. I recently did another 2-day Intensive Therapy treatment and received even deeper help with my issues. Joan is the best Psychotherapist that I have found. I drove 2 1/2 hours to be with her and would do it again in a heartbeat to receive the benefits of her 40 years of experience in her field.
Thank you for your book and the reference to Joan …… you are both an answer to my prayers.
